Imperfection is the new perfection!

Many years back, I had a friend who used to draw picture of people he knew, based on their personality. I remember he drew me as a person who was trying desperately to hold and carry a nearly collapsing high pile of bricks, which were stacked on top of each other! And yes, he was right! I was a person who needed (still sometimes do) to control the situation and maintain things in its perfect condition.

Well … even though I am still a perfectionist, I have always tried to challenge myself through my life in different ways. When I started to paint in a more professional way, I realised that my mentality would mostly gravitate towards creating a flawless piece of work rather than embracing the uniqueness of each work as a result of limitations and imperfections.

I love experimenting, particularly in my art practice. However I have realised that my experimentation usually happens within some hidden frame, which is unconsciously limited by my fear of losing the control over things rather than in a spontaneous and “free-spirited” way.

So, when I was creating this little piece of work on paper, which essentially is just a color study, I felt the urge to leave it as how it is and not complete it. I intentionally added the message “imperfection is the new perfection” to remind myself that perfection is rather a relative subject. We define “aesthetic perfection” in different ways. To my opinion what really matters at the end is how we challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zone in order to experience something new and adventurous, or maybe something which is a little bit scary and yet rewarding.
